What Is the Gottman Method, and How Can It Help Your Relationship?
If you have looked into couples therapy, you may have come across the term “Gottman Method.” It is one of the most widely used and researched approaches to relationship counselling, and it is the approach used in our couples therapy sessions at The London Psychology Clinic.
Here is what it actually involves, and why so many therapists rely on it.
Where the Gottman Method Comes From
The Gottman Method was developed by Dr John Gottman and Dr Julie Schwartz Gottman, based on more than four decades of research into thousands of couples. Rather than being built on theory alone, the approach grew out of close observation of what actually happens in relationships that last, and what tends to happen in relationships that struggle.
This research led to a clear, structured framework that therapists can use to help couples understand their patterns and make meaningful changes.
The Idea Behind It: The “Sound Relationship House”
At the centre of the Gottman Method is a framework sometimes called the Sound Relationship House. It breaks a relationship down into building blocks, including:
- Building genuine understanding of your partner’s inner world
- Expressing fondness and admiration regularly
- Turning towards each other during everyday moments, not just big ones
- Managing conflict constructively, rather than avoiding or escalating it
- Supporting each other’s hopes and goals
- Creating shared meaning together
Rather than treating conflict as something to eliminate, the approach recognises that some level of disagreement is normal in any relationship. What matters is how couples handle it.
What Gottman Method Sessions Look Like
Sessions typically begin with an assessment, helping the therapist understand your relationship history, strengths, and the areas causing difficulty. From there, sessions focus on practical skills, including:
- Recognising unhelpful communication patterns before they escalate
- Learning to raise difficult topics without triggering defensiveness
- Repairing conflict when things do go wrong
- Rebuilding trust and emotional connection
This is a practical, skills-based approach. You leave sessions with tools you can use straight away, not just insight.
Who the Gottman Method Can Help
This approach can benefit a wide range of couples, including those:
- Who feel they keep having the same argument without resolving it
- Who are navigating a breach of trust
- Who feel emotionally distant from one another
- Who are going through a major life transition, such as a new baby or career change
- Who have a generally strong relationship but want to strengthen it further

Hi, I am Marilena and I’m glad you’re here. At my practice, the London Psychology Clinic, my team and I offer thoughtful, down-to-earth support to help you navigate whatever’s going on in your life.
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or simply unsure of your next step, you’re not alone. Together, we can make sense of what you’re experiencing and find a way forward that feels right for you.
The main areas I work with are depression and anxiety disorders, including OCD, GAD, PTSD, health anxiety, and phobias. I also work with people facing all sorts of life transitions and emotional challenges – relationship issues, burnout, family conflict, or just a sense that something isn’t quite working. You don’t need to have a clear label for what’s going on. If you’re here, it probably means you’re ready for something to shift.
