Panic Attacks

When fear strikes suddenly—and without warning.
Panic attacks are sudden episodes of intense anxiety that come on quickly and often without a clear cause. They can be incredibly frightening, with physical symptoms that may feel overwhelming and out of proportion to the situation. Many people describe them as feeling like they’re dying, losing control, or having a heart attack.
While panic attacks themselves are not dangerous and don’t cause physical harm, the experience can be so distressing that it creates a lasting fear of it happening again. This fear can lead to avoidance behaviours and an ongoing cycle of anxiety.

What Does a Panic Attack Feel Like?
Panic attacks are characterised by a rapid onset of physical and emotional symptoms, often peaking within 10 minutes and typically lasting between 5 and 20 minutes. Some people may experience them once or twice a month, while others may have several a week.

Common symptoms include:

  • A sudden, overwhelming sense of fear or dread
  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
  • Sweating or trembling
  • Shortness of breath or a choking sensation
  • Hot flushes or chills
  • Nausea or stomach discomfort
  • Dizziness, light-headedness, or faintness
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Dry mouth
  • An urgent need to go to the toilet
  • Feeling detached or unreal
  • Fear of dying or losing control

Even though these symptoms can feel extreme, it’s important to remember that panic attacks themselves are not harmful—they will pass, and recovery is possible.
