How Much Does Private Therapy Cost in London?
If you’re considering therapy in London, cost is probably one of the first things on your mind. It’s a completely reasonable question – and one that deserves a straight answer.
Private therapy in London is not a single fixed price. It varies depending on the type of therapist you see, their level of qualification and experience, and where they are based. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a clear picture of what to expect.
This guide covers typical costs, what affects the price, and what you actually get when you pay privately for therapy in London.
What does private therapy typically cost in London?
Here is a realistic overview of what you can expect to pay per session for private therapy in London:
- Counsellor or therapist – £60 to £100 per session
- Psychotherapist – £80 to £130 per session
- Clinical or Counselling Psychologist – £120 to £200 per session
- Chartered Psychologist (specialist) – £150 to £250 per session
Sessions are typically 50 minutes long. At The London Psychology Clinic, you can find full details of our fees on our Fees & Insurance page.
What affects the cost of private therapy?
Several factors influence how much you will pay for a session:
Qualifications and professional registration
A fully qualified Clinical Psychologist with a doctorate-level training and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) will generally charge more than a counsellor or therapist. This reflects the level and depth of their training, not simply seniority. If you are dealing with a complex or longstanding difficulty, a higher level of qualification is often worth the additional cost.
Type of therapy
The therapeutic approach used can also affect cost. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is widely available at various price points. Specialist approaches such as Schema Therapy, EMDR, or trauma-focused therapy may cost more, and are typically offered by practitioners with additional specialist training.
Location in London
Therapy practices based in Central London – particularly in areas such as Mayfair, Kensington or the City – tend to charge at the higher end of the range. That said, many practitioners now offer online sessions, which can make location less of a factor.
Online vs in-person
Online therapy sessions are often priced similarly to in-person appointments, though some practitioners offer a small reduction. The more important consideration is what works best for you – both are clinically effective.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on what brings you to therapy. For a focused issue – such as a specific anxiety or a single difficult life event – a short course of six to twelve sessions may be sufficient. For more complex or longstanding difficulties, longer-term work is often more appropriate.
Your therapist will discuss this with you at your first session. A good practitioner will be transparent about what they think you may need and why, and will review progress with you along the way.
Is private therapy in London worth the cost?
For many people, the answer is yes – for several important reasons.
- You can be seen quickly, often within days rather than months
- You choose your therapist rather than being allocated one
- Sessions are private and completely confidential
- There is no GP referral required
- You can focus on exactly what matters to you, at your own pace
For people who have waited months on NHS waiting lists, or who have found that a GP referral pathway didn’t quite fit their needs, private therapy offers a level of access and choice that can make a significant difference.
What about using insurance?
Some people have private health insurance that covers therapy. If so, it is worth checking your policy – many insurers will fund a set number of sessions with an approved provider. The London Psychology Clinic works with a number of insurance providers.
If you are considering both options, our article on self-pay vs insurance therapy covers the key differences and can help you decide which route makes more sense for your situation.
