What to Expect at Your First Private Therapy Session
Starting therapy can feel like a big step. Many people put off making an appointment because they are unsure what the first session will be like. The good news is: your first private therapy session is designed to be safe, supportive, and focused on you. Here’s what you can expect.
A Warm Welcome
Most psychologists know how daunting the first step can feel. At your first private session, you’ll be greeted warmly and given the opportunity to settle in. If the session is online, your psychologist will ensure you’re comfortable with the platform and that the technology works smoothly.
Understanding Your Background
Your psychologist will usually begin by asking about your current concerns, your personal history, and your goals for therapy. This isn’t about going into every detail at once, it’s about building a picture of your situation and helping the therapist understand what you need. You’re free to share at your own pace.
Collaborative Goal-Setting
Therapy is a partnership. Early sessions often involve discussing what you’d like to achieve, whether it’s reducing anxiety, coping with stress, recovering from trauma, or improving relationships. Your psychologist will explain how they can help and agree on goals with you.
Confidentiality and Boundaries
Many people worry about privacy. It’s important to know that all registered psychologists follow strict professional codes of confidentiality. What you share stays private, unless there are exceptional circumstances related to safety. Your therapist will explain this clearly in your first session so you know where you stand.
Practical Details
A first session typically lasts around 50 minutes. Typically sessions are held on a weekly basis especially in the beginning of therapy as this helps establish a good rhythm. Frequency can later become biweekly upon discussion with your therapist and if this is clinically viable. Your psychologist may suggest an initial number of sessions and then review progress together. Private therapy fees are usually paid per session and may be reimbursed by some health insurers if you have cover.
How You Might Feel Afterwards
It’s normal to feel relieved after opening up, but also a little tired or emotional. Therapy can bring up big feelings. The important thing is that you have taken the first step and started the process of change.

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or simply unsure of your next step, you’re not alone. Together, we can make sense of what you’re experiencing and find a way forward that feels right for you.
The main areas I work with are depression and anxiety disorders, including OCD, GAD, PTSD, health anxiety, and phobias. I also work with people facing all sorts of life transitions and emotional challenges – relationship issues, burnout, family conflict, or just a sense that something isn’t quite working. You don’t need to have a clear label for what’s going on. If you’re here, it probably means you’re ready for something to shift.
